Dance is the hidden language of the soul of the body.
- Martha Graham

At Opus, we witness this language spoken every day. From the shy child finding their confidence to the community coming together in celebration, the impact of our work resonates far beyond the stage.

Welcome to Opus

Founded in 1988 by James Grant, Opus Dance Theatre is rooted in Harlem’s rich artistic legacy and committed to advancing the full spectrum of the Pan-African experience through performance and education. What began as a dance company has grown into a dynamic cultural institution that blends tradition with innovation, connecting students to history while preparing them for the future.

Through multi-disciplinary programs in dance, music, drama, creative communication, martial arts, animation, aviation, chess, and entrepreneurship, Opus equips young people with both artistic discipline and real-world skills. Our work builds confidence, sharpens critical thinking, and opens pathways that allow students to thrive locally and internationally.

Our Pillars of Impact

We don't just teach dance; we build character, confidence, and community through four core areas of focus.

From scoring nine points as a striker to exploring the aviation industry, Opus helped her see that she could be the driver of her own story.
